Hi Pickleballers - You are receiving this e-mail because at some time in the recent past you have either played pickleball at Kerry Park or expressed an interest in pickleball to someone who has played there, and have volunteered your e-mail address.  If you do not wish to receive further notifications about this subject let us know and we will remove your name from the distribution list.

For those of us who play pickleball regularly it is recognized that the availability of pickleball courts in the South Cowichan area, both summer and winter, is limited relative to other areas of the CVRD.  Although the South Cowichan area has 31% of the CVRD’s population, there are no-free play dedicated outdoor courts,  further, there are no indoor courts available during the winter.

To address this the South Cowichan Pickleball Club has been established.  At present it is simply a name that has been registered as a Society using the Province’s model bylaws. Currently the Society has no paid members with: Rick Hollingworth, Brian Johnson and Laurie Vasey listed as Directors.

Moving forward, it is our hope that representing the members of a club will add weight to any future representations to elected officials, not-for-profit organizations and the public with regard to increasing access in our area.

The purposes of the SCPC are:

  • To promote the game of pickleball, emphasizing its health and social benefits,

  • To advocate for increased access to pickleball courts in the South Cowichan Area (CVRD Electoral Areas A to E) to local governments, not-for profit entities and the general public, and

  • To fund and hold tournaments and related activities as determined by our membership.

Our initial objective, as noted, will be to secure increased access to pickleball courts in the south end, both outdoors and indoors.

As a first step we had planned to hold a meeting at the Kerry Park Recreation Centre, when pickleball started in the spring to: solicit members, amend the bylaws, elect directors, determine fees etc., but this is not going to happen in the foreseeable future.

In the interim we are requesting that you provide us with an Expression of Interest in joining the Club. Kindly respond to this e-mail indicating that:

  • You are interested in joining the Club, or,

  • You may be interested in joining the Club, or,

  • You are not interested in joining the Club.

Please avoid hitting “Reply All” as you will be replying to over one hundred recipients of this email.

A quick note on fees.   Because, in the near term, we will not be holding tournaments, running clinics or renting court time, we would anticipate annual membership fees would be in the vicinity of $5 to $10 per year.  As mentioned earlier, the actual fee amount will be determined by vote at our first in-person meeting.

Stay safe and best regards,

Rick Hollingworth, Brian Johnson and Laurie Vasey
